The thing is probably original to the house, making it 44 years old. At first, the push-button controls were kind of a nostalgic novelty, and the I tried to use them. It seemed like everytime I cooked on the stove, the heat setting I needed was between two of the FIVE heat setting available. There were also a few times where I tried a new recipe, and it called for the food to be cooked at Medium or Medium-High, but I only had Wm, Lo, 3, 2, and Hi. What the crap! I always thought that Warm and Low were pretty much the same thing.
After some extensive internet searching, I found the one I wanted:

I really like the versatility of the multi-burners. It also has the controls on the right side, since I'm right-handed. And above all... IT'S ADJUSTABLE!!!! I ordered the thing on Thursday, June 21 and the guy at Lowe's said that it had a 10-14 day lead-time (that's business days, too), and he said that he would call me when it came it. About 2 weeks later, I got home from work on Friday, July 6 with a message on my answering machine.
I rushed over to Lowe's to pick it up, only to wait about 30 minutes for the people in Customer Service to find someone to bring my stove out to me. I brought my new bundle of joy home and was elated to see that my new stove fit perfectly in the opening of my old stove. So, after another trip to the hardware store to pick up some electrical hardware that I didn't know I needed, I had my brand new stove installed.

Very slick! I decided to try out a dish that I hadn't cooked in a long time: Pepper Steak. For people outside of my family, this is strips of round steak simmered for 1.5 hrs in a flavorful mixture of beef broth, red wine, onion, garlic, curry powder, and green pepper (of course). I also cooked up some rice, which I was always hesitant to cook on my old stove because "Hi" caused it to boil over and 2 couldn't make it boil (ah, adjustability!).
Clean-up was a breeze since the top is a solid, smooth piece of glass. Another wonderful feature I'm sure I'm going to enjoy in the future.
Side story: While I was at the store picking up the ingredients for dinner, I was trying to find a small bottle of wine so I could get the 3/4 cups needed for the dish, and not waste too much (since I don't drink). I was able to find this 4-pack of Merlot with 4 bottles that were 187 mL. This looked like it would do the trick, so I picked them up. When I got home, I wondered if I needed to open more than one bottle in order to get the required 3/4 cups. Anyone out there know how much 187 mL translates to? Anyone? Anyone? Me neither, so I busted out my trusty Convert program that I used for engineering stuff in college, and found that it was exactly 0.7904028 cups. That's close enough for me.
Alright children, time for review:

The new stove top looks very nice.
So is this just part one of the overall kitchen remodeling plan?
I've heard that of all the remodeling projects you can undertake, the kitchen has the best return on your investment.
-Surge!
On the red wine, Kev - look for Red Cooking Wine next time, usually on the same aisle as the vinegars and salad dressings. This might be your best option if you aren't going to be drinking the Merlot.
