This is one of those stories that just makes a guy feel like an idiot:
So I'm sitting at my computer balancing my checkbook in Quicken while waiting for my laundry to finish up when I hear an airhorn outside. Since I have a big window in my front door, I can't exactly peep through that unnoticed to see who's out there. So, I go out into the garage (there are windows in the garage doors) to see if anyone was out there. I didn't see anything, but as a turned the door knob to go back into the house from the garage...
It didn't turn... I just stood there in disbelief. I never lock that door. My door knobs (which I installed myself) are such that you can turn a locked door knob from the inside, but not from the outside. So, I'm standing there trying to think what to do while thinking to myself "I'm locked out of my house, and yet I'm still in my house". I tried to find something to try and jimmy the door open, but nothing worked. I had just watched "It Takes A Thief" on Discovery the other day, so maybe that's what put it in my head to try and kick down my own door.
Only one problem, I'm barefoot. But, a guy who's locked out of his house has gotta do what a guy who's locked out of his house has gotta do. It took about a dozen emotionally painful kicks with my tender feet, but I got back in. The damage wasn't too bad. The only damage was a split door jam around the strike plate (the thing that the door latches against). The trim around the door came loose, but I was able to push it back in its place.
I wonder how that door got locked....
Fun times on a Saturday night.
